How it works

Share price ÷ earnings per share

The starting numbers are fictional examples. This calculator does not fetch market data or identify a suitable investment.

Keep the earnings period consistent

A $60 share price divided by $3 in earnings per share produces a P/E of 20. Use trailing earnings for a trailing P/E, or an estimate for forward P/E. Comparisons become misleading if the periods or accounting measures differ.

When earnings are zero the ratio is undefined. Negative earnings can produce a mathematical negative ratio, but it is not useful for the usual P/E valuation comparison. This tool flags that situation instead of presenting a negative result as cheap.
